ERODE: To create awareness on AIDS/HIV among people, camps will be conducted at 58 places in the district, said Collector D. Karthikeyan on Thursday. Participating in the World AIDS Day programme conducted at the Indian Medial Association hall, he gave nutritious food to HIV positive patients. Mr. Karthikeyan said that the awareness camps would be conducted from December 1 to 15. The evils of the disease and the preventive measures would be explained to the public. HIV patients should not be neglected or humiliated. They should be treated with care, he said. The Collector said that the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society had granted Rs. 6.89 lakhs to Erode district for the awareness programmes. With this fund, awareness lectures would be organised for lorry and bus drivers, labourers, Government Employees and school and college students. The Health and Rural Development departments would also conduct 112 awareness camps, he said.
Training to SHGs
About 100 self-help groups (SHGs) would be given training on AIDS/HIV and later they would conduct awareness camps in villages. Earlier, a rally was taken out from the District Headquarters Hospital to IMA hall, in which nurses, nursing students, students and eunuchs among others participated. G. Nagarajan, a senior doctor, with a `Stop AIDS' slogan painted on his body, took part in the procession.
