Insurance cover for four lakh coir workers

KOCHI: Four lakh coir workers have come under insurance cover from Thursday with the Coir Board and New India Assurance Company working out a revised Coir Workers' Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for which the Board has paid the premium.

Any person engaged in any work connected with the various processes in the coir industry, direct or indirect wage earners from employers, dealers or producers of coir products, persons employed through a contractor or through an agent and self-employed persons who depend mainly on coir industry for his or her livelihood will be treated as coir worker for the purpose of the insurance policy, a statement from the Coir Board said here on Thursday.

The insurance cover is for accidental death or disability. Compensation is available to the disabled coir worker or to the legal heirs of the deceased coir worker for disability or death from visible causes that have been listed by the insurance providers. Compensation is for Rs.50,000 in case of death or permanent disability. For permanent partial disability, the compensation is Rs.25,000. The scope of the compensation has been widened to include any injury to fingers of the coir worker.

According to the Coir Board, persons in States other than Kerala are to send their claims through the regional offices of the Board at Pollachi, Vishakapatanam, Bhubaneswar and Bangalore.

Coir workers in Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki can submit their claims through the senior inspector, Coir Mark Scheme, Alappuzha. In respect of Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts, claims can be made through the assistant director, National Coir Training and Design Centre, Kalavoor, Alappuzha.
