Sensex recovers lost ground

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index on Thursday more than made up for its losses, as it gained a steep 155.97 points, or 1.77 per cent, on revival of heavy buying activity encouraged by firm Asian advices.

Shares ranging from those of public sector undertakings (PSUs) to consumer goods, automobile to pharma and banks to metals attracted heavy buying by both foreign and domestic funds and closed with notable gains over a broad front.

The BSE 30-share Sensex, which lost 142.35 points to close at 8788.81 on Wednesday, started higher at 8813.82 and after a temporary fall to 8769.56, shot back to a high of 8960.11 and closed at 8944.78. The index not only wiped out yesterday's losses but also gained fresh grounds paving the way for further gains in the coming days, brokers said.— PTI
