Bangalore: Nomination papers filed by 20,540 candidates have been found to be in order after the scrutiny of papers filed for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections to be held in the first phase on December 19. The scrutiny took place on Thursday and Saturday is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Wednesday was the last date for receiving nominations for the first phase of elections. Of the total, 5,978 intend to contest the zilla panchayat and 14,562 the taluk panchayat elections. The party-wise break-up of candidates whose papers have been accepted according to the State Election Commission is Congress - 1,590 candidates for zilla panchayat and 4,152 for taluk panchayat elections, BJP - 961 and 2,322, Janata Dal (Secular) - 1,271 and 3,272, Bahujan Samaj Party - 174 and 364, Communist Party of India - 16 and 18, Communist Party of India (Marxist) - 14 and 33, Nationalist Congress Party - 0 and nine, and independents - 1,952 and 4,392. There are a total 1,005 zilla panchayat and 3,683 taluk panchayat seats which are going to be filled through the two-phase elections. The second phase of elections will be held on December 23.
