SPREADING THE MESSAGE: Harikrishnan on his cycle performs skipping to create AIDS awareness. Photo: T. Singaravelou
PONDICHERRY: Thirty-two-year old Harikrishnan observed the World AIDS Day here on Thursday in a unique way. When curious onlookers watched with wonder, Harikrishnan did skipping while peddling his cycle to spread the message - Stop AIDS Keep the Promise, the theme for World AIDS Day 2005. He learnt the technique while on his daily travel to his work place in Auroville from Muruganpakkam, where he resides. It all started after he practiced the skill to ride the cycle without the support of hands. "After I started riding without my hands on the bar I thought of skipping while riding. It was just fun in the beginning. But then I started practicing it on a daily basis to achieve something". Harikrishnan is now planning to take his feat to further heights by getting an entry into the Limca Book of Records. Recently, he travelled along the ECR to Mahabalipuram on his cycle and covered a distance of 70 kms in 4 hours skipping all the way. "I had several falls but luckily never got any serious injury", he added. Meanwhile, the Day marked several awareness rallies and cultural programmes. The Chief Minister N Rangasamy flagged off a youth rally from Indira Gandhi Statue. Later, Mr. Rangasamy and the Health Minister E Valsaraj distributed prizes to winners of school and college-level painting and essay competition, specially conducted to create AIDS awareness among the youth. A cultural show was also held at Kamban Kalai Arangam.
