Imbibing intricacies of fine arts from the masters
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Students of Indian music at the University of Madras can now learn the finer points of music and dance from the masters of the arts.
At a two-day national seminar on `Teaching methodology in music and dance in State government institutions, colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu,' organised by the Department of Indian Music, intricacies of fine arts will be taught by artistes such as M. Balamuralikrishna, Sudharani Raghupathy, Priyadarshini Govind and Kalanidhi Narayanan.
Inaugurating the seminar on Thursday, Dr. Balamuralikrishna, also an adjunct professor in the department, exhorted students to perfect the nuances of the art through regular practice.
It was only through frequent interactions with veteran musicians and dancers that students could be inspired to take up pursuit of the arts, Vice-Chancellor S.P. Thyagarajan said.
The sessions on the first day on teaching methodology in dance will cover adavu, compositions, improvisations and treatises on dance.
The second day would feature similar aspects of music, M. Premeela, professor and head of the department, said.
Two special programmes will be featured: a lecture-demonstration by dancer Priyadarshini Govind on `Facets of improvisation in dance' and a music concert by V.K. Manimaran, an alumnus of the department.
