Simla Youngs posts win

NEW DELHI: Simla Youngs beat Assam Regimental Centre (ARC), Shillong, 6-5 in the tie-breaker after a 1-1 deadlock in regulation time in a first round qualifying match of the Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday.

The local team conceded an 89th minute goal to the Assam side to take the match into the tie-breaker but prevailed in the penalty shoot-out. Ogbeide B. Austin scored Simla Youngs's goal in the 25th minute while Lalding Liana pulled off the dying-minute equaliser for ARC.

In the tie-breaker, Austin, Bhupender Thakur, Rakesh Palmi, Dharminder Kharola and Manish Kumar scored for the Delhi side while Manoj Chaudhry struck in the `sudden-death' period. Gordana, Lalding Liana, Amit Aich, Santa Singh and Sangliana were the Assam team's scorers.

In another first-round match, the Border Security Force (BSF) trounced local side Shastri Club 7-0 after a 1-0 lead at the break. BSF struck three goals in the last four minutes. Gurjit Singh Atwal, Kamal Kishore and Gurjit Singh scored two goals each for the Jalandhar team while Deepak Kumar scored one. BSF will meet Simla Youngs in the second round on Saturday.
