NEW DELHI: Public resentment over continuing exploitation of lakhs of power consumers and the "indifferent" attitude of the Delhi Government and private power distribution companies towards their grievances now threatens to snowball into a major agitation. A protest rally of consumers with a helping hand from the residents' welfare organisations and non-government organisations is being organised here on December 23 to protest against inflated bills, fast-running meters and failure of the power privatisation experiment in Delhi. The protest rally will be led by Delhi Residents' Welfare Associations Joint Front in close coordination with organisations like Citizens' Alliance for Promotion of Responsive Governance, Efforts Group, Association of Retired Defence Officers, Parivartan, Delhi House Owners' Forum, Apex Association of Delhi Colonies, Women's Task Force of RWAs, South Delhi Senior Citizens' Council. The rally is being organised at Safdarjung Club and will then proceed towards the BSES Rajdhani office. According to Delhi RWAs Joint Front secretary Pankaj Aggarwal, the aim of the rally was to put on record the grievances of the citizens against the high-headedness of the discoms. "Whatever the explanation or excuse they may offer for these inflated bills, the fact remains that the consumer is being made the scapegoat," he added. "The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has been a mute spectator to the exploitation of consumers. The assurances by the Delhi Government too have not materialised. We have been forced to take to the streets to protest the indifferent attitude of the Sheila Dikshit Government, DERC and discoms,'' he added.
