NEW DELHI: Observing that even 60 years after Independence one has not been able to provide buildings and proper facilities to all schools in the Capital, the Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Directorate of Education of the Delhi Government to file a status report within two weeks on availability of infrastructure facilities in government-run schools. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Sharma issued the direction on the basis of media reports that many schools in the city lacked basic facilities like buildings, toilets and potable water.Last week, the Bench had taken suo motu notice of the reports when Delhi High Court lawyer Ashok Aggarwal had displayed clippings of a news items in court. The Bench in particular asked the Directorate of Education to ensure safety of 4,000-odd students in the Jehangirpuri Senior Secondary School in North-West Delhi who were studying in a building that was in the condition of being declared abandoned. In his submission, Mr. Aggarwal submitted that students of this school were facing risk to their lives as parts of it could come down any day. Asking the Directorate to take immediate remedial measures, the Bench warned that it would hold the officials concerned responsible if anything untoward happened to the students.
