Spirited fightback by Andhra

Sports Reporter

145-run third-wicket partnership by Arjun Yadav and Anirudh Singh

ANANTAPUR: A spirited fightback by Andhra bowlers in the last session of play reduced Hyderabad to 211 for five at stumps on the first day of their Elite Group B match at the RDT Sports Centre grounds here on Thursday.

Hyderabad, after an initial twin-blow, was 147 for two at tea and looked good for a huge total with skipper Arjun Yadav (69) and Anirudh Singh (78) accumulating runs, though in an agonisingly slow manner.

Y. Venugopala Rao broke this 145-run third-wicket claming the prize scalp of Arjun Yadav. He followed it up with the wicket of the well-set Anirudh Singh in the next over.

Spot of bother

Earlier, Hyderabad, electing to bat, was in a spot of bother as the Andhra medium pacers Shahabuddin and Kalyan Krishna used the early morning dew and moisture to their advantage and struck two early blows in the 9th and 10th overs respectively.

Opener Daniel Manohar's half-hearted push saw the ball caressing the bat and make its way in to the gloves of M.S.K. Prasad. The very next over, Kalyan Krishna trapped the debutant Abhinav Kumar right in front. Both wickets fell with scoreboard reading 13. Arjun and Anirudh then resurrected their team by exhibiting a fine temperament. Keen to break the flourishing partnership between Ajuan and Anirudh, Andhra skipper Venugopala Rao pressed in service as many as eight bowlers and kept shuffling them for the elusive breakthrough.

Missed chance

Andhra had a chance of watching the back of Arjuan Yadav in the 38th over, but debutant Lakshman Kishore failed to latch on to a catch at point.

At draw of stumps, Khaleel Ibrahim (28) and Amol Shinde (19 batting) were at the crease. For Hyderabad, all-rounder Amol Shinde and opening batsman Abhinav Kumar made their debut, while left-arm spinner Lakshman Kishore earned the coveted ACA cap.

The scores:

Hyderabad — 1st innings: D. Manohar c M.S.K. Prasad b Shahabuddin 8, A. Kumar lbw b K. Krishna 4, A. Singh c Rayudu b Venugopala 78, A. Yadav c & b Venugopala 69, V. Kumar lbw b Shahabuddin 4, I. Khaleel (batting) 28, A. Shinde (batting) 19; Extras: 1 (nb-1); Total: (in 90 overs) 211 for five.
