Fee reduced

HYDERABAD: Following a plea from the industry, the State Government has issued orders reducing the amount to be paid while taking bank loans by hypothecating title deeds as collateral security. According to G.O. Ms No.2045 issued on November 28, the new rates will come into effect from Thursday. The amount had been reduced to 0.1 per cent of the total loan amount, subject to a maximum of Rs.1,000. Earlier it was 0.5 per cent subject to a maximum of Rs.50,000. - Special Correspondent

Dravidian Studies

HYDERABAD: In a bid to promote research in fields related to Dravidian Studies, the Dravidian University has formulated a scheme to provide financial assistance to individual scholars for publication of their works.According to a press note issued here on Thursday, the quantum of assistance would be decided on examining the manuscripts. The last date for submission of applications is December 31, 2005. - Special Correspondent

Peacock population

Hyderabad: Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy has directed the forest officials to undertake a massive rehabilitation programme for increasing the number of peacocks whose population is fast dwindling of late. Reviewing the departmental work here on Tuesday, Dr. Reddy asked the officials to identify locations for establishing national parks. - Special Correspondent

Girl electrocuted

Sangareddy: Switching on the television proved fatal for the sixteen-year-old Kammari Bhavani of Karamundi village of Nyalkal mandal in Medak district on Wednesday night. High voltage passed through the television set killing the girl on the spot. Another boy who was trying to plug in his mobile phone for charging was also severely injured. All the houses in the village felt the shock. - Staff Reporter

Commits suicide

NIZAMABAD: Yellai Dharmaiah (60), a farmer of Kulashpur village in Nizamabad mandal reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his agriculture field, on Thursday morning. He is survived by wife, Lakshmi, two daughters and one son. He married off his daughters' marriage last year and was said to have run into debts worth Rs two lakh as he had to dig four borewells on his field. Sub-Inspector S. Exchange of fire

VISAKHAPATNAM: Police and Maoists exchanged fire near Theruvada village of Komarada mandal in Vizianagaram district on Thursday evening.

However, there were no casualties. A police constable, Nagaraju, was injured in the leg. - Special Correspondent

Cops, Maoists clash

KURNOOL: Police and Maoist guerrillas exchanged fire near Chalama railway station in the Nallamala forest on the Kurnool-Prakasam border on Thursday. No casualties were reported either side. According to reports, the police party which was combing the area ran into the ten-member armed squad of the CPI (Maoist). Both sides exchanged fire for 10 minutes with AK-47 rifles and other fire arms. - Staff Reporter

Court directive to official

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the State High Court directed Commissioner, Disability Welfare of, to appear in person before the court to explain the implementation of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995, when recruiting for various categories in the State cadre. The bench, comprising Justice Chalameswar and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan, was dealing with a writ petition filed by Rama Subba Reddy. - Legal Correspondent

Legal Literacy Day

CHITTOOR: The legal services day was observed in the district from November 9 to 30 under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority. K.S. Appa Rao, District Judge and Chairman of Legal Services Authority, told on Thursday that 53 Lok Adalats and 106 legal literacy camps were organised at difference places during the period. Mayor inspects construction works

KADAPA: Kadapa Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy on Thursday expressed ire at officials and a contractor alleging sub-standard construction of a Satellite City of 4,000 houses for poorer sections on the outskirts of Kadapa.

Mr. Reddy, who inspected the ongoing Satellite City construction, warned the officials that lapses in the quality of construction would be referred to the Vigilance Department for action. Staff Reporter

Principal, lecturer in verbal duel

KURNOOL: Principal of Silver Jubilee college M. Nagaraju and a lecturer identified as Ramalinga Reddy reportedly indulged in a verbal duel in the college on Thursday leading to tension on the campus.

According to reports, the principal refused to accept the official papers from Mr. Reddy sent through an attendant asking for personal appearance of the lecturer. The response of the principal annoyed the lecturer, who was physically challenged. Mr. Reddy allegedly abused the principal and ransacked the contents on the table. - Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: A help desk has been set up in the Regional Transport Office here to help the vehicle owners.
