Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the by-elections in two Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. In view of the unrest in eastern Uttar Pradesh following the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanad Rai, security has been tightened in the Aurai assembly seat in Sant Ravidas Nagar district which goes to polls along with the Nagal(reserved) seat in the Saharanpur district.
PAC, CRPF deployed
A senior police officer here on Thursday said additional companies of the PAC had been deployed in Aurai, which is near Ghazipur where the MLA was murdered. The Government had already deployed 13 companies of the CRPF in Aurai and nine companies in Nagal. While DIG (Mirzapur range) would camp in Aurai, the DIG (Meerut range) would monitor the election process at Nagal.
24 candidates in fray
Altogether, the fate of 24 candidates -- 15 in Aurai and 9 in Nagal -- would be decided in the by-elections where 6.11 lakh voters would exercise their franchise in 556 polling booths. Counting of votes would be done on December 5. The Aurai seat fell vacant after Samajwadi Party member Uday Bhan Singh's membership was cancelled following his conviction in a murder case. Mr Singh's wife is the SP candidate for the by-polls. By-election to Nagal seat was required following the death of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) member Ilam Singh.
