Judiciary wants land near court

Plot can be used for housing family courts, chambers

CHENNAI: The State higher judiciary has written to the Tamil Nadu Government seeking transfer of a piece of land adjacent to the High Court campus for constructing new buildings for family courts, chambers and meeting halls, Chief Justice A.P. Shah has said.

Addressing members of the Law Association in the Small Causes Court premises here on Wednesday, Mr. Justice Shah said once the land was transferred, requests of the Association for a better accommodation would be considered. The process would be completed shortly. The land in question houses the Esplanade bus terminus.

Expressing concern at the cramped family court complex and the lack of space at the Association, the Chief Justice said, "The family court is virtually in a shambles."

Noting that the atmosphere for justice delivery system in Tamil Nadu was conducive, he said cooperation from the Bar was essential for the good performance of the judiciary.

Mr. Justice Shah, a second generation Judge, said he was "compelled" to enter the profession by his father. "I wanted to make a career in drama," he said, adding that a probate proceedings that he witnessed changed his attitude towards the profession and convinced him that law was more exciting than drama.

Association president J. Rajendra Prasad wanted the higher judiciary to take note of the efficiency of advocates practising in subordinate courts while making recommendations for appointment of judges.

Many judges selected from mofussil courts had done justice to their appointment.

He said the Association, which would celebrate its platinum jubilee next year, had chalked out a year-long programme. Highlighting the shortage of space for Association activities, he requested the Chief Justice to consider allotment of a bigger hall for it.

He pledged the complete cooperation of the Bar to the judiciary and said the Bar and the Bench were two sides of a coin.
