TAMBARAM: Close on the heels of the Chennai Central Crime Branch arresting an official in the rank of Deputy Collector in a land-grabbing case, the Crime Branch CID has initiated proceedings against a Village Administrative Officer at a Poonamallee court. The charge against the official pertains to forging of land documents and making of a fraudulent claim over a piece of land belonging to a garment manufacturing company at Alandur. The company, VAK Engineering Private Limited, bought 11.29 acres of land on M.K.N. Road, Alandur, in 1973. As the owner did not fence the entire site, some persons started building houses and commercial complexes. Today, more than half the land has been allegedly encroached upon. Company representatives said they had complained to the Revenue Minister in 1997 alleging the official's involvement. After a preliminary investigation, the case was taken up by the CB-CID. In the meanwhile, an investigation conducted by the Personal Assistant (Land Acquisition) to the Kancheepuram Collector revealed that the official, whose name figures in the report filed by the CB-CID, had committed several irregularities during his tenure as Tribune Officer of Adambakkam village. The probe pointed to fabrication of `pattas' and other land documents and records. Though the CB-CID has booked cases under various sections of the Indian Penal Code against the official and two others, company officials are concerned at the manner in which land grabbers could tamper with documents, stake claim for land belonging to someone else and sell them. Houses and even commercial complexes have been built on the company land, they allege. When the company kept shuttling between courts, investigating agencies and government offices, its officials were asked to compromise by settling for a price for the encroached land. When they resisted they were assaulted.
