TAMBARAM: The Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Chengalpattu has directed the Indian Air Force Station, Tambaram to commence recovery of monthly dues and arrears from members of the Air Force Civilian Employees Cooperative Thrift and Credit Society, in order to repay deposits made in the society by ex-servicemen and war widows. The Deputy Registrar's order brings to end, the suspense over repayment of term deposits made by ex-servicemen to the tune of over Rs. 3 crores. Problems began in December 2004, when a section of the members of the society (civilian staff of IAF) obtained a stay order from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) against recovery of monthly dues from their salaries for the loans they had taken from the society. As recovery of dues from society members was not made, the society was not in a position to repay the matured amount and interest on investments made by depositors. Though the depositors approached the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies and got a direction to the IAF to recover dues from monthly dues of society members, it was not done. Following this, the depositors approached the Air Headquarters, New Delhi and the Chief Minister's cell. Last month, the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Chengalpattu gave a categorical direction to the Air Officer Commanding, IAF, Tambaram to "recover the monthly dues, and arrears outstanding due to the society from the monthly salary of the members" as per provisions of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Societies Act, 1983 and in accordance with the Madras High Court directions in April this year. After this, IAF officials have started recovering the monthly dues from the salaries of the society members, bringing to an end, the ordeal of hundreds of ex-servicemen and widows who had deposited their retirement and death benefits in the society.
