Expo to spread awareness of human trafficking

CHENNAI: The campaign against trafficking and sexual exploitation, an initiative of Mysore-based Odanadi Seva Samsthe, will raise awareness in the city through a painting exhibition and a cultural programme.

The paintings will be on view from Thursday at the Lalit Kala Akademi, though the formal inauguration by the Commissioner of Social Defence, Ashok Rajan Mohanty, is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. They are the product of a unique camp held in February in Mysore when several artists from across the country and abroad worked on 75 paintings, with young residents of Odanadi also brushing in a few strokes.

Odanadi is home to 85 children, who are provided education and vocational training. It's current initiative, that combat trafficking and sexual exploitation in South Asia, is supported by the AED and Butterfly, New Delhi. It is also involved in prevention activity and getting convictions for offenders. "We are trying to create awareness about legal systems and introduce more people to the concept of social policing," said Stanly Parashu of Odanadi.

Yet another therapeutic art form the children have learnt is semi-classical dance. Their prowess in it, gained under Vidushe Kumudini Achichi, will be on display at the C.S.I. Ewarts MHSS in Purasaiwalkam on Saturday morning and at the Comfort Inn, Marina Towers, Egmore, in the evening.
