HYDERABAD: The winter session of the Legislative Assembly will begin on Saturday morning coinciding with its golden jubilee celebrations. Although the Government initially planned that the House should meet for ten days, it might choose to extend the sittings by five days, making it the longest winter session in more than a decade. This will not be the only record. Once the winter session is over, the Assembly would have conducted business over a period of 72 days through three sessions during this calendar year, the longest in the recent past. Assembly proceedings will commence in the morning with the adoption of a motion to condole the death of the former President K. R. Narayanan. Immediately afterwards, a seminar will be organised on "The role of parliamentary democracy in strengthening the nation" in the old hall to mark the commencement of the golden jubilee celebrations. Speaker of the Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee will address the seminar while Governor S. K. Shinde will be the chief guest. Six former Speakers-- Agarala Eswar Reddy, Thangi Satyanarayana, G. Narayana Rao, P. Ramachandra Reddy, Y. Ramakrushnudu and first woman Speaker Pratibha Bharati-- and 49 members of the first AP Legislative Assembly, the erstwhile Hyderabad and Andhra State Assemblies would be felicitated on the occasion. At 4 p.m. a special session will be held to discuss the progress achieved by the State in the last 50 years. It was at this time and day in 1956 that the first session of the House of an integrated Andhra Pradesh was held. Members of Telangana Rashtra Samithi have decided to boycott the function in protest against what they term as discrimination against Telangana. Konda Lakshman Bapuji, who is listed among the 49 ex-legislators, declared on Friday that he would also keep away to protest against his eviction from `Jala Drushyam' here.
