SECOND TO NONE: Children with physical and mental disabilities at a function to mark World Disabled Day in Hubli on Saturday.
HUBLI: The cultural programmes organised to mark World Disabled Day here on Saturday stood testimony to the fact that challenges always bring out the best in a person. Children with physically and mentally disabilities from the twin cities stole the show with their attractive performances. They danced, enacted skits, sang songs and made the best use of the forum that the Departments of Disabled and Senior Citizens' Welfare, Women and Child Development and various associations jointly provided to them. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar underscored the need for providing suitable opportunities and forums for people with disabilities to present their talents. Instead of showing sympathy, people should provide them with opportunities, he said. Mr. Srikar also honoured meritorious children and distributed prizes. Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation P. Manivannan called for preparing an annual action plan to solve the problems faced by people with disabilities and to help them in their ventures. Mahendra Singhi, President, Jain Youth Federation, said that every year the association distributed around 10,000 artificial limbs to physically challenged people. N.G. Chachadi, Principal, Karnataka Arts College, called upon the children with disabilities to believe in their capabilities and shed inferiority complex. V.G. Karpurimath, I.K. Lakkundi and others who spoke on the occasion urged the State Government to take steps for early disbursement of the grants to the non-governmental organisations engaged in the service of disabled people. The programme began with an invocation from children with disabilities. Malati Pola, Deputy Director, Women and Child Welfare Department, welcomed the gathering. B.B. Puradal, District Welfare Officer for the Disabled, proposed a vote of thanks.
