DINDIGUL: Marketing facilities will be created to sell products manufactured by the physically disabled persons in self-help groups. One of the shops at a commercial complex owned by the District Rural Development Agency in Dindigul town will be allotted to them to market their products. This announcement was made at a function held at the Collectorate here on Saturday to the World Disabled Day. In his inaugural address, Collector, S. Murugaia, said such facility would help all physically disabled SHG members to tap urban consumers. National identity card had been distributed to 5,073 physically disabled persons, free bus pass to 412 persons and educational aid to 346 persons so far. The number of physically disabled persons in Dindigul district was higher than the State average. All departments should work in cohesion to take all the government sponsored schemes to eligible disabled persons. In his special address, Gandhigram Rural Institute Professor M.P. Boraian said State Transport Corporations should allow disabled persons to board the bus at any place. Drivers should stop the bus whenever they saw disabled persons on the road. To identify such persons, a small flag in any colour chosen by the Corporation or district administration could be given to physically disabled persons to enable drivers to identify them. Representatives of various NGOs appealed to issue free bus pass or travel concession to all physically disabled persons. Later, he released a handbook for disabled persons prepared by the National Trust and distributed welfare aid including crutches, Braille watches, artificial limbs, wheel chair, tri-cycles worth Rs.42,600. The District Rehabilitation Officer, K. Sellamuthu, the District Revenue Officer, K. Iyanar, and the DRDA Project Officer, P. Murugesan, spoke. Later, physically disabled children performed cultural programmes.
