Lawyer terms Bill to curb domestic violence a milestone

Staff Reporter

`It accepts and recognises that the menace exists'

KOZHIKODE: The senior Supreme Court lawyer Indira Jaisingh has said that the Bill to curb domestic violence, for which rules are being drafted by Parliament, is a milestone in legislation relating to women.

Ms. Jaisingh was delivering a lecture at the Calicut Bar Association here on Saturday on "Recent trends in women's legislation."

She said the law accepted and recognised that domestic violence existed, and, hence, the need to protect women in keeping with the right to protect against discrimination, whether financial, physical or mental.

She said the trends were healthy and hinge on the commitment of the Centre to the Common Minimum Programme, which promised women's uplift. The Bill to protect women against sexual harassment at the workplace, expected to be passed by Parliament during the winter session, was another valuable piece of legislation based on the guidelines of the Supreme Court. The law would bring within its ambit women in the organised and unorganised sectors too, including lawyers, doctors and chartered accountants.

She asked advocates not to just cite precedents but be concerned in creating law too.

Speaking on her fight for the right to live and right to work of pavement dwellers in Mumbai, Ms. Jaisingh wanted members of the legal fraternity to take up the cause of the underprivileged and women.

She lauded the invaluable contribution made by legal luminaries, including the former judges V.R. Krishna Iyer and P.N. Bhagavathy.
