ANANTAPUR: The district council of Communist Party of India (CPI), which met here on Friday and Saturday, urged the State Government to ensure justice to groundnut farmers of the district who had suffered heavy crop loss this year. The party requested the Government to take up the issue of crop insurance with the Centre as the present system of calculating threshold yield based on the last five years' average production would in no way benefit the farmers. A comprehensive system of crop insurance could only help farmers of the drought-prone district. As a majority of the crop cultivated in about 21-lakh acres was damaged due to excessive rain, farmers who had not insured their crop were also looking for some help. Such farmers should be given a compensation of Rs. 2,000 per acre, the party leaders urged. On the allocation of water to Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR) the party leaders said the G.O. issued by the Government was not clear on the issue and it required to be rectified specifying the source of allocation.
