CPI criticises Congress stand on delimitation

Special Correspondent

Panel had issued order refixing territorial limits

Pondicherry: Secretary of the Pondicherry State committee of the Communist Party of India (CPI) N.Kalainathan MLA has expressed strong protest against what he said "dubious stand the ruling Congress is adopting" on the matter of delimitation of Assembly constituencies for the forthcoming polls. (Assembly polls are due here in 2006).

Addressing newsmen here on Saturday he said that although the Delimitation Commission had issued an order re-fixing the territorial limits of Assembly constituencies and finalising 23 constituencies for Pondicherry instead of present 21 segments, five segments for Karaikal instead of six and one constituency instead of two constituencies in Mahe region nothing had been done by the Congress to express its consent for the new pattern of constituencies. (Yanam would continue to have the lone segment, as per the order).

Coming polls

Mr. Kalainathan who insisted that the constituencies as finalised by the Commission should be adopted in the forthcoming polls said he had also urged this point at a meeting with the chairman of the Delimitation Commission in Delhi. He said that it was a shock and surprise to him and to his party delegation that the Congress had expressed the intention to have the polls only as per the existing number of constituencies instead of on the basis of the constituencies finalised by the Commission.

Mr. Kalainathan said that his party would soon launch an agitation to press the point that the next Assembly polls should be on the basis of the latest order of the Commission.
