KPCC recommends cut in power tariff

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) executive has recommended a reduction in electricity tariff in the light of the comfortable power position in the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday after the meeting, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said that the executive had made this demand in the light of the comfortable power position in the State, which had experienced a good monsoon. He said that the executive had urged the Government to effect a cut that would be beneficial for the ordinary people.

The KPCC also urged the Government to promulgate an ordinance if necessary to bring the Goonda Act into effect in order to bridle the growing Goonda and Mafia gangs. The draft of the Goonda Act had already been circulated in the Assembly. In view of the possibilities of further delay in the legislation, the KPCC had asked the Government to consider an ordinance.

Mr. Chennithala said the executive had urged the Government to ensure discipline in the police force, by upholding the responsibility of the higher officials to effectively curb the waywardness of policemen. The Government should take action against those accused without mercy. He alleged that the opposition parties were promoting division in the police force in order to derive political mileage by politicising every single issue relating to the police. Such attempts would not do any good, he said pointing to the recent statements of V.S. Achuthanandan and some other leaders of the Communist Party of India(Marxist).
