BJP panel to begin probe today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP spokesman B.K. Sekhar said here on Saturday that the party commission inquiring into the party's debacle in the byelection in Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency would start functioning on Sunday. The commission would inquire not only into the erosion of party votes but also about alleged indiscipline among party functionaries. The spokesman said party workers can adduce evidence in person or anonymously. After the commission submits its report, the party bodies would evaluate the findings and take appropriate actions. — Special Correspondent

BSNL releases SIM card

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BSNL Kerala has announced the release of Excel Prepaid SIM cards to all the applicants who had booked up to November 30. The SIM cards can be collected by the applicants from the concerned booking centres/franchisees by producing the original booking coupon and identity cards. — Staff Reporter

Additional coach for train

Thiruvananthapuram: The Railways have provided one more air-conditioned three-tier coach permanently in 2625/2626 Kerala Express, between Thiruvananthapuram and New Delhi. The train already has four such coaches. According to the Railways, the coach will be introduced in the New Delhi-bound train from here on Monday. The service from New Delhi will have it from Thursday. — Staff Reporter

CITU plans stir against Government

Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will blockade the Secretariat, Collectorates and taluk offices in the State on December 20 in protest against what it calls the anti-labour and anti-people policies of the United Democratic Front Government, headed by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. At a press conference here on Saturday, CITU general secretary P.K. Gurudasan and a leader of the organisation, K.O. Habeeb, said 10-lakh labourers and their families would participate in the blockade from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The CITU would organise regional rallies from Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kozhikode from December 11 to muster support for the stir. — Staff Reporter

Association refutes charges

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Scheduled Castes Development Department Employees Association has refuted the charge that the poor quality of food supplied to hostellers at the Women's Post-Matric Hostel in Kollam had led to the incident of food-poisoning there a few days back. K. Ravindran Nair, association president, said in a rejoinder here on Saturday that 65 persons, including employees, had consumed food at the hostel on that particular day and only 18 had showed symptoms of food poisoning. — Special Correspondent

Computer course at NIT-C

KOZHIKODE: The National Institute of Technology, Calicut, (NIT-C) in collaboration with IBM Global Services India Private Limited, will offer a job-oriented advanced computer course `Certificate in object and web technologies (COWT)' for B.Tech/diploma/degree students. Admission to the course is based on an entrance test to be conducted at NIT-C at 10 a.m. on December 18. The last date for receipt of applications for the entrance examination is December 16, the centre manager, NITC IBM ACE Centre, said in a release here. (Ph: 0495 2286526/2286527).

Trial offer from BSNL

THRISSUR: BSNL has announced an offer of two months' `free trial' to its existing Internet customers for upgrading to broad band connections. According to a release issued here on Saturday, BSNL officials said the facility will be available Kunnamkulam, Guruvayur, Thrissur, Mulankunnathukavu, Irinjalakkuda, Mannuthy, Kuriachira, Punkunnam, Ollur, Nedupuzha, Amalanagar and Perumbilavu, `subject to technical feasibility.' The release said the application for this facility will have to reach BSNL before December 25. — Staff Reporter

BSNL free trial offer for broadband service

KOTTAYAM: The BSNL has come out with a free festival offer for trial of its broadband service `Data One' for two months. Under the scheme, all its land line and Internet dialup users can make use of Plan 250 scheme. The offer is valid up to December 25, according to a press note.
