Risk from antibiotics

NEW DELHI: Delhi Medical Association president K.K. Aggarwal on Saturday said that repeated use of antibiotics during childhood could increase the risk of lymphoma, a cancer that affects the body's lymphatic system.

"Until now it was thought that indiscriminate use of antibiotics could lead to antibiotics resistance but new studies have shown that antibiotics if taken limitlessly can increase the risk of contracting cancer," said Dr. Aggarwal, at a function here.

Additional stoppages of trains

NEW DELHI: For the convenience of passengers, Northern Railway will provide additional stoppages of a few trains. The 4790A Rewari-Delhi Sarai Rohilla Express will be provided an additional stoppage at Garhi Harsaru station at 6-07 p.m. for one minute from December 5 to March 31, 2006. On an experimental basis for six months, the 2445 New Delhi-Udhampur Uttar Sampark Kranti Express will stop at Kathua at 4-37 a.m. to depart at 4-39 a.m. whereas the 2446 Udhampur-New Delhi Uttar Sampark Kranti Express will stop at Kathua at 9-37 p.m. to depart at 9-39 p.m.

New IGNOU course

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is launching a new diploma in value added products (fruits and vegetables) for the January 2006 academic session. Based on self-learning instructional materials with multimedia and counselling, the diploma programme is essentially a mix of theoretical and practical courses to develop skills in post-harvest management and value addition of fruits and vegetables.

Eligibility for admission is Ten Plus Two pass, preferably in science or agriculture, or enrolment in the BPP and diploma programme.

Jainism and medical science

NEW DELHI: Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor B.L. Joshi on Saturday said combining medical science with Lord Mahavir's spiritual teachings was an innovative experiment that would benefit the society at large.

Inaugurating Jain Doctor's International Conference-2005 here, Mr. Joshi said Jainism has more to do with how a person conducts himself in his daily life.

Novel gesture

NEW DELHI: Fifty orphaned and destitute children, whose parents were victims of gang warfare or killed in shootouts with police, will be provided quality education by "Indraprastha NCR", a newly launched news magazine run by women.

In a release, the magazine said a large number of children from western Uttar Pradesh were crying for attention with about 2,500 children in Ghaziabad itself. It has been decided to adopt 50 children from U.P. initially.
