Campaign on safe bio-waste disposal

Staff Reporter

NGC to educate hospitals and labs of danger

HYDERABAD: A campaign for safe disposal of bio-medical waste was undertaken by the National Green Corps (NGC) cadets of over 1,450 degree colleges in the State from Saturday.

Cadets of the NGC would go to nursing homes, clinics, pathological labs and hospitals and persuade the managements to dispose the bio-medical waste in a scientific way.

The NGC director W.G. Prasanna Kumar, in a press release, said that many health care professionals were dumping such waste in all places.

A silent killer, the bio-medical waste was also being deposited on the banks of rivers, in irrigation canals and in the lake and pond beds polluting the water bodies.

Bhopal tragedy

As per the Bio-Medical Waste Management and Handling rules, disposable needles shall be burnt and spoilt soon after use.

A needle burner costs Rs. 500 and every health care establishment can afford it, Mr. Prasanna said.

In addition to beginning the campaign, the cadets would observe two-minute silence on Saturday to remember the thousands of victims who died on that day 21 years ago due to leakage of methyl isocyanate gas from Union Carbide factory at Bhopal.
