PIECING TOGETHER: Thatched sheds put up for the Southern Regional Cattle Fair in Tirupati collapse due to heavy rain on Saturday.
TIRUPATI: The Southern regional cattle fair, which was inaugurated a couple of days back by Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, had to be wound up on Saturday, a day ahead of its scheduled closing. After being postponed twice in the past due to the torrential rain that hit all the southern States, the fair was declared open at the grounds opposite Hasthakalaramam here on Thursday. A heavy rain at the end of its second day damaged the venue, while the heavy gales brought down the pandals and sheds erected to house the cattle. With no other option left, the officials hastily arranged the contests and declared the winners. The Chief Executive Officer of AP Livestock Development Agency (APLDA) Nissar Hussain gave away the prizes at a closing ceremony on Saturday and declared the event closed. The heads of cattle were immediately dispatched to their respective places. Winners Forty milch animals bagged the first prize that carried a cash award of Rs.1,500, 33 got the second prize (Rs.1000) and 21 secured the third prize (Rs.750). A memento and a merit certificate were also distributed to owners. The Joint Director (Animal Husbandry), Somasekharam and principal of Veterinary college, Narsi Reddy, were among the participants.
