Chennai: Brahma Gana Sabha launched its December Art Festival here, on Saturday, by honouring carnatic musician M.Balamuralikrishna, and Tamil playwright Raadhu with the titles `Gaana Padmam' and `Naataka Padmam' respectively.

The two artistes were honoured as a mark of personal distinction in the propagation of carnatic music and Tamil dramas, the citation read. Handing over the awards, Ajit Prakash Shah, Chief Justice, Madras High Court lauded the two performers for their contribution to music and art.

Mr.Balamuralikrishna had brought sparkling creativity to Carnatic music and reassessed the link between South Indian and North Indian traditional music and was the reigning monarch of Carnatic music, Justice Shah said.

Recalling his own association with Marathi theatre, he said there was much influence from South Indian culture and traditions. He said Raadhu had endeared himself to the masses with his plays, notable among which was `Kalyanathil Galatta,' Mr.Shah said.

A.Natarajan, former director, Doordarshan Kendra, felicitated the artistes. Nalli Kuppusami Chetti, president, Brahma Gana Sabha, said the title of "Naatya Padmam" would be conferred on Bharathanatyam exponent Kalanidhi Narayanan a month later, when the dance festival of the sabha commences.
