Soldier killed in LTTE attack

V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO: One soldier was killed and seven were injured in five separate attacks on Saturday by suspected LTTE cadres in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula.

According to Army sources in Jaffna, the soldier was shot dead by a suspected LTTE man, while the seven suffered injuries during grenade attacks across the Jaffna peninsula.

"This is an attempt by the LTTE to confine our movements and thereby bring pressure on the Government," a senior military officer in Jaffna peninsula told The Hindu on Saturday night. He described the situation as "tense and unpredictable."

According to sources in Jaffna, the town was tense for the second consecutive day. On Thursday night two Tamil youths were shot dead by "unidentified gunmen." On Friday, there was a hartal in response to a call by an LTTE front organisation. There were several grenade attacks on Friday, in which five soldiers were reported injured, but none was killed.

Saturday started on a normal note, but the situation rapidly deteriorated during the day as the attacks rocked the northern town between 11.30 a.m. and 7.30 p.m.

An Army water tanker was also fired at, but no casualty was reported.

Tension prevailed in a Muslim-majority pocket in Sri Lanka's eastern Trincomalee district, where two Tamil civilians were killed in a mob attack in Muttur district.
