Staff Reporter

Chocolate, milk products destroyed

CHENNAI: A godown storing chocolate and milk products of AMUL in Velappanchavadi near Tiruverkadu on the city's western suburbs, was gutted in a fire that broke out early on Saturday.

Fire and Rescue Services authorities said they received a call from a watchman of another company that a fire broke out in the AMUL godown around 3.20 a.m.

Immediately five tenders were pressed into service along with an equal number of Metrowater tankers.

The Fire and Rescue Services authorities said it was a big godown and around 1a.m. a load of AMUL products were unloaded and stacked in the place.

Some people in the vicinity told the Fire and Rescue Services authorities that a lightning struck the godown, leading to the fire. However, the Fire and Rescue Services authorities said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The fire was put out after a 15-hour battle, said the Fire and Rescue Services authorities. No one was injured in the mishap, they added.
