Chennai: Shutters of all the four drinking water storage reservoirs near the city had to be opened on Saturday due to heavy inflows. The Sathyamurthi Sagar dam in Poondi received 32,100 cusecs inflow and 35,118 cusecs were released. The surplus water flows through the Kosasthalaiyar river, which has a flood carrying capacity of 1.2 lakh cusecs. The river flows through Melsembedu, Valliyur, Tamaraipakkam, Jagannathapuram and Vallur before joining the sea at Ennore. About 6,600 cusecs, which was the rate of inflow, was discharged from the Red Hills reservoir. This affected many downstream villages, including Samiyar Matam and Vadaperumbakkam. Surplus from the Chembarambakkam tank was let into the Adyar river, which was in spate all along its course. The rate of inflow into the tank was 9,000 cusecs and outflow 10,000 cusecs. Cholavaram reservoir received 326 cusecs, which was released as outflow. On Saturday morning, storage in all four reservoirs was: Sathyamurthi Sagar 3,015 million cubic feet (full capacity 3,231 mcft); Red Hills 3,262 mcft (3,300 mcft); Chembarambakkam 3,120 mcft (3,645 mcft) and Cholavaram 831 mcft (881 mcft).
