Over 800 delegates from India and guests from other countries to attend

VISAKHAPATNAM: Some 800 delegates from all over India will attend the 54th annual conference of Neurological Society of India - NEUROCON 2005 - to be held here jointly by Andhra Medical College and the Neuro Club Visakhapatnam from December 15 to 18. Announcing this at a media conference on Saturday, conference organising secretary N. Subrahmanyam said that there would also be two guests from the U.S., one each from the U.K. and Singapore, as also from SAARC countries - Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan.

The objective

"The main purpose of the meet is to deliberate and share the experiences of neuroscientists in the country in treating various diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nerves,'' he said.

There would be special reference to strokes and modern methods of treatment, refractory epilepsy, brain tumours in childhood and a symposium on minimally invasive surgery and movement disorders.

Prof. Subrahmanyam said: "This surgery is aimed at reducing the surgical trauma and risks to the patient and also reduce hospital stay.

We are able to diagnose even complicated diseases, thanks to the technological developments like CT scan and MRI scan. Brain surgery is no longer dangerous and the mortality rate has come down to less than one per cent." Some 220 papers would be presented at four scientific sessions to be held simultaneously, and a day had been allotted to CME, which would be an update.

Conference organising chairman K. Venkateswarlu said that the national conference was being held after a long gap of 24 years and on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the Department of Neurosurgery in AMC and King George Hospital.
