Coast Guard copter rescues five

CHENNAI: A Coast Guard helicopter was flown into the southern suburb of Thiruneermalai to rescue five persons caught in floodwaters on the causeway across the Adyar on Saturday morning. More than 10,000 cusecs released from the sprawling Chembarambakkam lake was let into the river. A mini truck crossing the causeway on the swollen river was engulfed in the floods. A driver and his assistant were trapped in the truck, as also a passerby. Two persons who tried to save them using ropes were also trapped. After a seven-hour wait, the helicopter lifted all the five, one by one, to safety.
