Letters to the Editor
While the BJP has given a fitting reply to Uma Bharti's act of defiance by suspending her, it should also take some serious steps to end the culture of dissidence and rhetoric in the party. Some of its leaders have a tendency to revolt openly instead of allowing the issue to reach its logical end. Inner party democracy is healthy but it should not imperil the party, lest it becomes a laughing stock.
S. Bakthavathsalan,
The rumblings and intense squabbling in the BJP are in the open with Ms. Bharti letting off steam. The issue shows the intense factionalism that exists among the second-rung leaders of the party. The RSS and the VHP have already distanced themselves from Ms. Bharti. With Atal Bihari Vajpayee in retirement mode and L.K. Advani poised to step down, a huge vacuum seems imminent at the BJP's helm.
Krishna Prasad,
