Hubli-Dharwad
Staff Correspondent
HUBLI: The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) will prepare within three weeks a detailed action plan for the comprehensive development of the twin cities according to the guidelines of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM). Speaking at the dedication ceremony of various facilities here on Saturday, P. Manivannan, HDMC Commissioner, announced that preparation of the action plan will begin immediately.
Cooperation
He said that with the cooperation of the council members, members of various non-governmental organisations, officers and staff of HDMC and the people, developmental works in the twin cities have begun and there is a visible change in Hubli-Dharwad. He thanked those who have helped the HDMC to bring about the change. The twin cities have been selected along with Bangalore for the implementation of the NURM under which 80 per cent of the cost of the projects is borne by the Union Government. Earlier, dedicating the various facilities, S.R. Morey, Minister for Municipal Administration, said that with the selection of the twin cities under the NURM, the responsibilities of officers and council members have increased. He called upon council members to forget their differences and join hands with the Commissioner in improving the infrastructure of the twin cities. Yamanur Gudihal, Leader of the ruling party (Congress); Bharati Patil, Leader of Opposition in the council; and council members Laxman Uppar and Altaf Kittur spoke. Former Mayor Firdous Konnur, who was a special invitee, requested the officials of the Hubli Electricity Supply Company and the North Western Road Transport Corporation to set up kiosks at the zonal offices of the corporation, which, he said, will make the offices more citizen-friendly. M.S. Srikar, Deputy Commissioner; Sanjay Bijjur, Deputy Conservator of Forest; E. Radhakrishna, Managing Director, NWKRTC; former mayors Vijayanand Hoskoti, Pandurang Patil, Mangalagouri Agnihotri, and Prakash Kyarakatti were present.
Inaugurated
On the occasion, the interactive voice response system, the website of the corporation and the services of 12 zonal offices were dedicated to the citizens of Hubli-Dharwad. The building bylaws manual was released.
