CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has forwarded to the Centre a Rs. 25-crore project for the development of the backward Mewat region for onward submission to the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), Rome, a spokesman of the Mewat Development Agency (MDA) said here on Sunday. He said that the IFAD president, Lennart Bage, had appreciated the steps being taken by the MDA for community development and strengthening the movement of Self Help Groups. He added that the proposed project would cover the areas of arable crop development, horticulture development, livestock and dairy development, off-farm activities, community development and formal education for a period of three years. A maximum amount of about Rs 8.30 crores would be spent for community development and about Rs 5.23 crores for formal education. The IFAD had already funded a project worth Rs 89.23 crores for the development of the area. The Mewat Area Development Project was aimed at improving the economic and social status of the people in Mewat, promote gender self-reliance on a sustainable basis and broaden the range of economic opportunities available to the community. The budget allocation for the development of Mewat had been revised from Rs. 8 cr to Rs. 23 cr.
