ON FIRE: Being the defending champion, Samaresh Jung was a bit tense in the final but held his nerves to win the 10m air pistol gold .

HYDERABAD: "I followed my technique and when I didn't, my luck ran high," said Samresh Jung, who clinched the men's 10-metre air pistol gold in the National shooting championship at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) range here on Sunday.

As defending champion, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) inspector was keen to win and a bit tense in the final. A point behind Vivek Singh, who topped the qualifiers with 580, Jung's nerves held out when it mattered. The bespectacled marksman chose to shoot only when he felt the time was ripe, which was often after most others had fired.

Sipping water now and then, his left thumb tucked away in his trouser pocket, the aim of Jung's Pardini pistol fetched scores of 10 and above in eight of his 10 shots. In contrast, Vivek Singh faltered close to the finish, slipping to 9.1 and 9.3 in his last two attempts.

"Vivek is a talented man," said Prof. Sunny Thomas, India's chief coach. "He should apply himself more, especially when training for the finals," he suggested.

    The results:
