DEHRA DUN: The Uttaranchal State Women's Commission chairperson, Santosh Chauhan, has sought an independent probe into the circumstances that led to the suicide of, Sarita, a class XI student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Srinagar (Garhwal) last Tuesday. " Several things have come to light after my visit to Srinagar yesterday. I have got the examination papers of Sarita sealed. Although the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan has formed a three member committee to probe the matter I have also recommended an independent enquiry to find out whether she was unduly harassed by the teachers," Ms Chauhan told The Hindu on Saturday. It may be mentioned that, Sarita, a national level Badminton player had ended her life by jumping into the river Alaknanda. A suicide note found in her diary accused a teacher of deliberately insulting her and giving her less marks in the examinations. A mob had attacked the principal and teachers immediately after her dead body was recovered from the river and a teacher was arrested on the basis of the suicide note. The State Education Directorate has also directed all teachers to pay special attention to the weak students. "In no way are the teachers supposed to insult or harass the weaker students," a senior official said.
