456 candidates in fray for panchayat polls in Udupi

UDUPI: As many as 456 candidates are in the fray for the zilla and taluk panchayats in Udupi district as on Saturday, which was the last day for the withdrawal of nominations.

A press release issued by the Department of Information here said that as many as 99 candidates have filed nominations for 25 seats in the Udupi Zilla Panchayat.

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have fielded 25 candidates each, while the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Samajwadi Party have fielded 20 candidates each.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has fielded one candidate, while eight independent candidates are contesting for the Udupi Zilla Panchayat.

As many as 357 candidates are in the fray for 95 seats in the three taluk panchayats of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala.

As many as 164 candidates are in the fray for 41 seats in Udupi Taluk Panchayat. They include Congress 41, BJP 38, Janata Dal (S) 30, Samajwadi Party 18, CPI (M) 1, and 36 independents.

As many as 120 candidates are in the fray for 35 seats in Kundapur Taluk Panchayat. As many as 73 candidates are in the fray for 19 seats in Karkala Taluk Panchayat.
