TIRUCHI: Traffic on the Tiruchi-Thanjavur Highway was diverted through Pudukottai on Sunday for the third time in 10 days after the Saturday night's rain eroded a portion of the Asoor causeway. Traffic was restored on Saturday after two days of restoration works. Soiling was undertaken during the period and sandbags were placed at vulnerable spots. However, the prolonged rainfall on Saturday night is believed to have loosened the soil, causing erosion. The erosion has rendered the causeway unfit for the movement of even light vehicles. Two-wheelers are being permitted provided the riders disembark and push their vehicles along the badly damaged patch. Road users complain that the causeway gets damaged every now and then due to the hotchpotch restoration, adding that there was a need to strengthen it with sandbags on both sides. Taking a circumlocutory route means an additional hour of travel time and corresponding increase in fares for the travelling public. Meanwhile, the Southern Railways operated special trains between Tiruchi and Thanjavur on Sunday at the timing announced earlier to mitigate the difficulty caused to travellers. It has decided to continue the special service on Monday too, informed C.K. Sivaraj, Public Relations Officer. The trains will depart from Tiruchi at 11.45 a.m., 2.45 p.m., and 6.45 p.m. and leave Thanjavur at 1.15 p.m., 4.45 p.m., and 9 p.m. The trains will halt at Manjathidal, Tiruverumbur, Solagampatti, Aiyanapuram, Budalur, and Alakkudi.
