HYDERABAD: In yet another case of a driver taking to crime, the Jubilee Hills police on Monday arrested P. Balaji, driver of a businessman, who reportedly fled with Rs. 9 lakhs belonging to his employer on November 26. The police recovered Rs. 8.71 lakhs from him.

Disclosing the details at a press conference on Monday, West Zone DCP Amit Garg said that the businessman, N. Srinivas Reddy, who runs Venkateswar Films Distribution company at Vizag, came to the city in his car driven by Balaji. Mr. Reddy brought along with him Rs.9 lakhs to purchase the distribution rights of a film.

    Abandons car, flees

After reaching his office at Prashasan Nagar in Jubilee Hills, Mr. Reddy asked his driver to drop his friend, Narasimha Rao, at Srinagar Colony. The cash bag was kept in the car. Balaji dropped Mr. Rao and did not return. Instead, he abandoned the vehicle near the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School and fled with the cash.

Based on information that the accused person was coming to Hyderabad by bus from Pune, the police apprehended him at Lakdi-ka-pul bus stop and recovered the money. Balaji confessed that he stole the cash to purchase a DCM van so that he could earn a living.

The DCP said that Balaji was involved in similar offences earlier too. In one case, he fled with Rs.4 lakhs from U. Srinivasa Rao in Kandukur and in the second incident stole Rs.50,000 from Mohammed Nazeer of Kothur.
