BANGALORE: The Government will pull out all stops and spare neither money nor effort in making Suvarna Karnataka, the golden jubilee of Statehood of Karnataka, grand and successful in every way, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh said here on Monday.

In an elegant start to an exercise to draft plans for a celebration that will last a year until November 1, 2006, Mr. Dharam Singh held a three-hour meeting before drawing up the plan of action for the elaborate celebrations.

Veteran journalist Patil Puttappa set the tone for the discussion that spanned a wide spectrum of views. He said policy-makers had failed in building on the unifying aspects of Karnataka and that now led to sharpening of differences and over-emphasis on parochial feelings within the State. Belgaum is a classic example, he said. "Though we know Belgaum belongs in Karnataka there has been no focussed development of the district or in harnessing human resource from the district more meaningfully in governance or socially and culturally," he said.

Jnanpith Award winner U.R. Ananthamurthy suggested that the Government can start by changing Bangalore to Bengaluru. The Kuvempu model schools, announced during the Kuvempu birth centenary celebrations, should not only take off, but they should also be truly model schools. Science Academy Chairman and former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation U.R. Rao said schools should have teachers who can inspire students, he said.

Kannada Sahitya Parishad president Chandrashekar Patil said the best way to celebrate the event will be to implement all recommendations of all reports (such as the Mahajan Commission report or the Sarojini Mahishi report on jobs for local people).
