An update on Arunachal

Aimed at giving an overview of the cultural history of Arunachal Pradesh during the past 150 years, an exhibition of photographs titled `Tribal Transitions' opened at the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Organised by the British Council in collaboration with the National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, the exhibition -- a part of the Tribal Transitions Project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council in the United Kingdom -- intends to highlight aspects of the tribal culture not recorded in written documents.

While historical photographs have been procured from British collections like the Royal Geographical Society, London, the Pitt-Rivers Museum, Oxford, the British Library, London, the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, and the National Army Museum, London, most of which have never been exhibited outside the archives in the United Kingdom, the contemporary ones have been clicked by the project photographer Michael Aram Tarr.

While the photographs form the main element of the exhibition, films produced by independent filmmakers in the North-East would also be screened. These films would provide an in-depth analysis on specific topics like environmental decay, religious and social changes. To provide school and college students with an up-to-date image of the North-Eastern State, education packages have been designed using fact sheets on the land, flora, fauna, people and culture of Arunachal Pradesh. Also on the cards is a craft demonstration by skilled artisans from the State. The exhibition will end on December 26. -- Madhur Tankha
