They enjoyed reading together

A. A. Michael Raj

Coimbatore: Over 200 students and teachers from schools in Coimbatore spent 2006 seconds (about 33 minutes) silently reading books at Vivekalaya Matriculation School on Dec. 2.

They were participating in "Read for 2006", an annual event organised to celebrate the joy of reading, along with students around the world. Everyone present took a "reading pledge" to enrich their lives through regular reading and make books their friends for life.

"Reading is the golden key to unlock unimaginable success for a lifetime," said Latha Dinesh, the chief guest. "It develops the four `Cs' of curiosity, concentration, confidence and creativity."

Students carried banners and raised slogans as they participated in a march around the school. Vivekalaya students enacted a skit. A story telling session by upper kindergarten students of SBOA Primary School and a poetry reading by Usha of Vivekalaya, made the programme memorable.
