It is usually students who do academically well or have finer talents in art and craft who are honoured. This time it was different. Children with high values and commitment were honoured at a function held recently. The programme titled `Promotion of Value-Based Education' organised by the Rotary Centre for Excellence, honoured 49 children from 16 schools in the district. These included students from public schools as well as Government schools. Children were selected on the basis on their character. It was their good manners, eagerness to help others and attitude for sharing that brought these children to the forefront, said Nitya Gopalakrishnan, in-charge of the Centre for Excellence. It was the class teacher and the principal in each school who selected these children. Assessing children for their good habits was a different assignment for the teachers, who are mostly engaged in giving marks for academic excellence.
