Queen's honour

Sujaikumar Bhowmick is a completely transformed man now, recalls his long lasting friend C.G. Satchit, a retired officer of the Kerala High Court, now settled at North Parur here.

Mr. Bhowmick is now Sir Charlie Bhowmick who received from the British Queen the title of MBE for his yeoman work in improving race relations at Keighley in Britain. He had found Keighley's Inter-Faith Group five years ago to foster friendship.

Charlie was awarded last month the MBE in the Queen's Birthday honours list for services to race and inter-faith relations in Keighley.

It was a travel from Madras to Kochi about 42 years back that cemented the friendship between Mr. Bhowmick and Mr. Satchit. The Bengali gentleman was going to London for higher studies in engineering when the ship got stranded in Chennai and he chose to visit his fellow traveller's residence at Vypeen here. Mr. Bhowmick got married to an English lady who was working in the judicial department and then he changed his name to Charles.
