NEDUMBASSERY: The State will seek Central clearance for three fishing harbours at Koilandy, Thalassery and Kasargod. Financial assistance would be sought for the maintenance and upgradation of existing harbours, said Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports, here on Tuesday. Enhanced assistance would be sought from the Centre for a comprehensive housing project involving construction of 25,000 houses exclusively for those in the coastal regions, especially fisherfolk, he told reporters at the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery. The Fisheries Department in association with the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) proposed to set up an ornamental fish park. The Ministry of Commerce has to clear the proposal. He said special grant should be given for the education of children of fishermen, especially those pursuing professional courses. The Minister said he would take up this matter with the Union Government. He said research studies conducted by the institutes of Central agencies should be made available to the State so as to enable it to take proper action. Mr. Presentation called for reintroduction of the Centre-State cost-sharing in sports infrastructure projects. He said he had placed this demand before the new Minister for Sports Oscar Fernandes. The Minister said it was proposed to expand Sports Authority of India (SAI) centres in Kollam, Alappuzha and Kozhikode.
