Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The two-day State Karate Competition, organised by the World Shotokan Karate Federation, Tamil Nadu, Jawahar Bal Bhavan and the Regional Centre for Art and Culture on the Gandhi Memorial Museum campus last week, provided a veritable feast for karate buffs in Madurai.

It was refreshing to witness young students locking horns for top honours.

Students of Mahatma Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Krishnammal Ramasubbaiyar School and P.K.N. HSS, Tirumangalam, bagged the maximum number of prizes.

Before the prize distribution ceremony, students of Anaiyur Jawahar Bal Bhavan staged an impressive folk dance performance, which included `poikal kuthirai,' `mayilattam' and `kaalaiattam.'

N. Manoharan, president of the federation; N. Sulaiman, Assistant Director, Regional Centre for Art and Culture; S. Kalairaja, secretary of the federation; and Sam Sathiaraj, Curator, Government Museum; took part in the prize distribution ceremony.

The winners received trophies and certificates.
