Grischuk beats Kamsky

NEW DELHI: Russia's Alexander Grischuk defeated former World championship semifinalist Gata Kamsky in the first game of their pre-quarterfinal clash in the World Cup chess championship at Khanty Mansiysk in Russia on Tuesday.

In the other two decisive battles, Sergei Rublevsky defeated fellow Russian Konstantin Sakaev and former World champion Ruslan Ponomariov got the better off Dutch Loek van Wely.

The results: Pre-quarterfinals: Game One: Etienne Bacrot (Fra) drew with Joel Lautier (Fra); Francisco Pons Vallejo (Esp) drew with Levon Aronian (Arm); Alexander Grischuk (Rus) bt Gata Kamsky (US); Alexey Dreev (Rus) drew with Boris Gelfand (Isr); Mikhail Gurevich (Bel) drew with Vladimir Malakhov (Rus); Konstantin Sakaev (Rus) lost to Sergei Rublevsky (Rus); Loek van Wely (Ned) lost to Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr).
