Criminal cases against four officials

Raichur: Sindhanur police have registered criminal cases against Mallappa, village accountant, Jawalgera; Ravikumar, village accountant, Lingsugur; Lingaraju, village accountant, Sindhanur; and D. Anjaneya, First Division Clerk, Tahsildar's Office, Sindhanur, on the charges of misappropriation of revenue funds collected in Sindhanur taluk. In a complaint lodged with the Sindhanur Town Police, K.P. Chandrahas, tahsildar, said that the accused, who took away receipt books from his office, had collected money from the farmers in the taluk and failed to remit the same in the treasury. — Staff Correspondent

Gutted

Raichur: Three persons sustained burn injuries when Basawaraj's house caught fire at Dinni village near here on Sunday. Household articles worth Rs.46,000 were destroyed. The police said that the incident occurred as Basawaraj's wife Maheshwaramma forgot to put off fire in the oven. The Idapanur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Driver killed

Raichur: Krishna, driver of a car, was killed on the spot after a lorry, coming from the opposite direction, collided with the car near Maski town on Sunday. The Maski Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Postcard campaign

Belgaum: Bharatiya Goyatra Samiti will be mailing at least 10,000 postcards to the Centre demanding implementation of the October 10 order of the Supreme Court against cow slaughter. Samiti president Rajendra Jain and secretary M.I. Hegde told presspersons that a "Shobha yatra" will be taken out on Thursday to Sardar High School ground where special pujas will be offered to the cow. — Staff Correspondent

`Black day' observed

BELGAUM: Barring minor incidents of stone throwing at two places, the "black day" observed to protest against the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya passed off peacefully. According to market police, miscreants threw stones at one shop each in Bhindi Bazaar and Fort Road. The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. — Staff Correspondent

Four arrested

SIRSI: Sirsi police have arrested Ganapati Parasappa Naik, Krishna Choulya Naik, Devendra Manja Naik, and Ravi Mastya Naik of Kayigudde village in Sirsi taluk for keeping country guns illegally with them and for allegedly killing Manjunath Parasappa Naik on December 1. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Correspondent

Cholera threat

Belgaum: The District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh has asked the Health Department to take preventive measures against cholera epidemic at Godachi in Ramdurg taluk, which will witness annual Sri Veerbhadreshwar Jatra Mahotsav from December 13 to 17. Similar measures will be taken in Kokatnur from December 26 to January 1. — Staff Correspondent

SSLC examination schedule

Bangalore: The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board will conduct the SSSL examination in March next with the following timetable. First language on March 16, Maths and Indian Social Science for visually challenged candidates on March 17, J.T.S Paper I and II and Indian Economics for visually challenged candidates on March 18, Science I Paper and II Paper and Indian Political Science and Civics on March 20, Second Language on March 21, Social Science on March 22 and Third Language on March 23. — Special Correspondent

Ph. D. for writer

PANAJI: The Goa University has awarded Ph.D. to Jayanti Naik, writer, for her research work, "The image of woman in Konkani folklore: A socio-cultural study," submitted through the Department of Konkani of the university. She conducted research under the guidance of Olivinho Gomes, former Vice-Chancellor of the university. She is the first recipient of Ph. D. from the Konkani Department. — Special Correspondent

Remarks irk trust

Mangalore: The Nagarika Seva Trust has objected to the remarks of Chairperson of the 12th Mangalore Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelan Sara Abubakkar on the establishment of thermal power projects in the district. According to a press release from President of the trust K. Somanatha Nayak, Ms. Abubakkar had stated that "industries need power and industries also give jobs to thousands of people and we should sacrifice the comfort of preserving environment at least to that extent" at the sammelan held at Muchchur on December 3. — Special Correspondent

Red Cross Utsav

Udupi: Vice-President of the State unit of the Indian Red Cross Society Chandrashekhar Shetty said on Monday that public-private partnership is required to help 22 million differently-abled people in the country. He was speaking after inaugurating the Red Cross Utsav organised by the Udupi district unit of the society. A Red Cross Bhavan will be built here. Stadium for Goa

PANAJI: The general body of the State-owned Sports Authority of Goa at its meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane on Monday decided to build cricket stadium of international standards in North Goa. Law Minister and Goa Cricket Association president D.G. Narvekar said the need of Goans is a cricket stadium of international standards and said land had been identified at Tivim and Guirim in North Goa for the proposed stadium. — Special Correspondent

Stone pelting claims lorry driver's life

Kasaragod: The driver of a tanker lorry was killed when a group of people observing a hartal on the 13th anniversary of the Babri mosque demolition pelted the vehicle with stones near here in the early hours of Tuesday, the police said. Sheen, 25, was hit on the head during the stone pelting at Santosh Nagar near here around 3 a.m. He lost control of the tanker, which rammed into a tree, the police said. The tanker was on its way to Mangalore from Thrissur.

While Sheen died on the spot, the cleaner of the lorry escaped with injuries, the police added. — PTI

Meet on vigil against bird flu

BANGALORE: Chief Secretary B.K. Das on Tuesday met the Vice-Chancellor of the Veterinary Sciences University, the Director of the Institute of Veterinary Biology and Animal Health and officials to discuss plans for gearing up for a possible bird flu epidemic.

The meeting noted that since the migration season of exotic species of birds will continue through January, arrangements have been made to collect bird droppings and blood samples to ensure that they are not carrying the virus, as per Union Government guidelines. — Staff Reporter

Report awaited on fatal accident at factory

BELLARY: Deputy Commissioner Arvind Srivastav has said he is awaiting the report of the Inspector of Factories and Boilers and the post-mortem report to fix responsibility for the fatal accident that occurred at Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Ltd. at Toranagal on Monday. Four labourers died and another was injured in the accident.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the police have registered a case of negligence. He will ensure that the company discharges its responsibilities with regard to payment of compensation and other aspects, he added. — Staff Correspondent

B1 centres offer new services

BANGALORE: Bangalore One (B1), the integrated one-stop service initiative of the State Government, on Tuesday started two new Regional Transport Office services. People can now visit any of the B1 service centres for renewal of learner's licence and payment of road tax for transport vehicles.

Rajeev Chawla, Secretary, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, said that the B1 centres are open 24 hours. They are located at Jayanagar, Yeshwantpur, R.T. Nagar, Rajajinagar, Banashankari, Vijayanagar, HBR Layout, Airport Road, Tannery Road, J.P. Nagar, Malleswaram, Nagarbhavi, Shanthinagar and Kalasipalya. People can also make electronic bill payments by credit card at the B1 portal, www.bangaloreone.gov.in. — Special Correspondent

Rice exhibition to begin on Friday

Bangalore: Rice Tech Expo, the fifth successive international exhibition and seminar, will be held here from December 9 to 11. It is being organised by the Rice Mill Reporter publications. Earlier events were held at Vijayawada, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Raipur.

Making out a case for Legislative Councils

BANGALORE: A book that makes out a case for all States to have an Upper House (Legislative Council), authored by A. Chakrapani, former Deputy Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council, is being released by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Legislative Council Chairman V.R. Sudarshan, who announced this here on Tuesday, said the Upper House in Karnataka, which will complete 100 years in a couple of years, has often been described as the finest example of the House of Elders. — Staff Reporter
